10x Mondays · Oct 5 – Dec 7 · 8:00–9:30pm
Casa de Cultura, Berkeley · Early bird $397 · Late bird $497 · 10 lead / 10 follow

Every scene has a few dancers everyone wants a dance with. You've danced with one. Their vocabulary wasn't the biggest, and nothing they did was especially complex. But something happened in those minutes that doesn't happen with anyone else on the floor, and afterward you couldn't quite name what they did.

It isn't what they do.
It's how they do it.

Most Zouk teaching hands you more patterns. This hands you more dials on the patterns you already have: velocity, size, friction, breath.

Clip · looping, muted The same movement danced twice: once with one change, once with many. Vertical, 10–20 seconds, no sound.

Each week we take one fundamental movement and work it three ways, from a single change, to a few, to the version I'd use with my own partners or in a competition round. You choose your level on every exercise. I'd rather you reach.

Ten weeks. Twenty dancers, ten of each role.

An hour and forty five minutes a week, so there's real time to work things until they land. Solo drills between sessions, no partner needed. Not a choreography.

Loom · 90–120 seconds Imaan on camera: friction, considerate hijacking, taste, why twenty, and lyrical music. Burned-in subtitles. Click to play.

Questions
Missed weeks and what to expect are answered in the FAQ

Questions

Am I the right level for this?

You don't need every variation, but you should be comfortable with most of these:

  • Basics
  • Lunge
  • Simple turn
  • Bonus
  • Soltinho
  • Balão
  • Frango assado
  • Pião
  • Undulations
  • Chicote
  • Cambré

If you're unsure, message me.

What can I expect as a follower?

To generate as much as you receive. You'll create velocity changes yourself rather than waiting to be moved, manage friction through the connection, and work on what I'd call considerate hijacking: adding to the dance so your lead's reaction is that was cool rather than that isn't where I was going.

What can I expect as a lead?

To accelerate and decelerate with intent, which is where freedom comes from when a song has no beat to hold onto. You'll also work on leaving room for a follower who's doing all of the above, which is harder than it sounds and is most of what makes someone good to dance with.

Do I need a partner?

No. You'll rotate through the room, which is most of the point. You buy either a lead pass or a follow pass, and they're capped separately so the room stays balanced.

The expectation is that you can dance your chosen role for most of the class content. Switching roles at times is welcome.

What if I miss a week?

Come fifteen minutes early and I'll catch you up. Just let me know beforehand each time, rather than turning up and hoping.

Miss one or two and you'll be fine. Miss three and you'll still get a lot out of the season. If you already know you'll miss more than three, join the next season instead. Fees aren't prorated for missed weeks.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are available up until September 30, by WhatsApp message or at [email protected]. Up to that same date you can also move your payment to the next season instead.

After that, you can hand your spot to someone else at any point, as long as they're the right level and I've approved it.

What if it turns out not to be for me?

Come on the first Monday. If by the end of that night you feel you're in the wrong room, tell me and I'll refund you in full, no explanation needed.

I'd rather you spend the money on something that fits than sit through nine more weeks being polite about it. I'll also tell you myself if I think you'd get more out of a different season.

How is this different from Zero to Zouk?

Zero to Zouk is for people starting from nothing, and it runs at 7:00 on the same Mondays.

This one assumes you already have the vocabulary and spends ten weeks on how you use it. They're separate programs, not levels of the same one.

What happens after the ten weeks?

There's a break, then a new season with a different theme. Each one stands alone, so you can take one, take all of them, or come back when a theme grabs you.

What should I wear and bring?

Bring a yoga mat. We stretch properly at the start, more than you’ll be used to from a normal class.

Footwear you’re comfortable dancing in. Socks or barefoot work too.

What if the price is a stretch?

There are a couple of volunteer spots each season. They come at a significant discount in exchange for helping out on the night, with things like checking people in and capturing content. Message me if you'd like one.

And if cost is the only thing standing between you and this, tell me anyway. I'd rather work something out than have you not come.

What if it's sold out?

There's a waitlist, and spots do open up. Leads and follows are capped separately, so one may still be available when the other isn't.
